Step-by-step guide

Last updated 22 July 2026

The long version of the setup: every screen, in order, from installing the app to turning the commission on. Follow the six steps and your store is running; the last section covers what to do when something looks wrong.

Before you start

ProfitTap shows one recommendation card on your product pages. A shopper taps the button and that product goes into their cart. That is the whole app.

Two limits decide whether it can work in your store at all. ProfitTap is delivered as a theme app block, so it needs a theme that supports app blocks (Online Store 2.0) — it cannot inject itself into a theme without them. And the card appears on product pages only: there is no cart-page, checkout, post-purchase or thank-you-page upsell.

Installing costs nothing: no monthly fee, no plans, no tiers. The only charge is a 3% success fee on the sales ProfitTap generates, and there is a 30-day free trial before any of that starts.

The app asks for three permissions, all read-only: read_products (only for the picker where you choose the offer), read_orders and read_all_orders (only to check refund and cancellation state, because a commission matures at 30 days and may need re-checking later than Shopify's standard access window). No product, order, theme or customer is ever created, edited or deleted by ProfitTap.

The one thing it writes to is the shopper's cart, when they tap the button — one unit, through Shopify's own cart API. That is the only write ProfitTap performs anywhere.

Steps 1 to 3 are the mandatory ones. Steps 4 and 5 are optional. Step 6 can wait too — but only until your 30-day trial ends, because after that the banner pauses until you authorise.

1.Install the app

Install ProfitTap from the Shopify App Store. When the install finishes, the app panel opens with a setup card.

Nothing is showing on your storefront yet — the card only exists once the block is in your theme, which is the next step.

Your free trial is not running yet either. The 30-day clock does not start at install: it starts the first time the banner actually works on your storefront. If you install today and add the block next week, the full 30 days are still ahead of you. Days remaining are rounded up, so a day that has started counts as a whole day in your favour.

2.Add the banner to your theme

This is the step that puts the card on your storefront.

  1. In the panel, press Add the banner to my theme.
  2. Your theme editor opens on the product template, with the ProfitTap block already added inside the main product section — the section that holds the price and the buy buttons. It is not dropped into a separate Apps area at the bottom of the page.
  3. If you want it somewhere else within that section, drag it. Directly below the buy buttons works well.
  4. Press Save in the theme editor. That is the moment the banner goes live.
  5. Optional: the block exposes three settings — accent colour (used for the button, the price and the side bar), card background (leave it empty and the card blends with your theme) and corner radius. Everything else — what to recommend, the wording, the commission — is configured in the app, not here.

Worth saying out loud: pressing Save is what makes the banner live. Until then, nothing changes for your shoppers. This is the single most common reason a merchant sees nothing.

3.Check the banner on a product page

Open one of your product pages on the storefront and scroll to where you placed the block. You should see a single card: the recommended product, its price and a button that adds it to the cart. One offer per product page — never a carousel, a bundle or a list.

The card takes your theme's font and text colour and mixes its own surfaces from that colour, so it reads correctly on light and dark themes with no configuration from you. The recommended product is added at its normal live price: ProfitTap applies no discount, bundle price or incentive of any kind.

If you see nothing on that particular product, it is not necessarily broken — the card is never drawn when there is nothing buyable to offer. See the last section.

The shopper-facing card is written in 15 languages (English, Spanish, Catalan, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese, Czech, Danish, Norwegian, Polish, Romanian and Swedish), taken from the storefront request locale, falling back to English. Product names are never translated by us — they come straight from your catalogue. The merchant panel is a separate thing and speaks two languages, English and Spanish.

4.Let the autopilot recommend, or write your own rule

The autopilot is on by default, so after step 2 your product pages are already showing recommendations. You do not have to do anything here.

What it actually does: it looks at both Shopify's own related-products recommendations for the current product and your wider catalogue, at the same time, and keeps only what a shopper can really buy right now, checking stock live on the storefront. Given the choice it prefers a complement — a product of a different type than the one on the page (wax for a snowboard) — over a same-type alternative, choosing across both sources; a same-type product is offered only when no complement is buyable anywhere. It prefers single-variant products, so a one-tap recommendation does not pick a size or colour on your shopper's behalf. The product being viewed and gift cards are excluded. If nothing buyable is found, no card is shown at all.

Being honest about what it is not. The autopilot has no intelligence about margin, price bands, purchase history or A/B testing. It is Shopify's related-products list filtered by real stock, preferring single-variant products. If you want control over a specific product, write a rule.

Creating a manual rule is two product picks and a save:

  1. In the panel, go to Manual rules and press to create one.
  2. Choose the source product with Shopify's resource picker — the product page where the banner will appear.
  3. Choose the offer product — what gets recommended. It cannot be the same product as the source.
  4. Optionally write your own title and description. Leave them empty and we use our own copy, translated into the shopper's language. Fill them in and your wording replaces ours for every shopper in every language: merchant-written copy is not translated.
  5. Save. Only one rule per source product is allowed — a second one on the same product is refused and you are pointed to the existing rule, so the copy you wrote is never silently overwritten.

How the two interact: a manual rule always wins on its own product page. If the product you chose to offer is sold out, the rule yields to the autopilot instead of showing a dead card. Pages without a rule show the autopilot, as long as it is on; turn the autopilot off and only your own rules appear.

One current limit: rules can be created, edited and deleted, but there is no way to pause one from the panel. To stop a rule, you delete it.

5.Read the Performance screen

Until ProfitTap generates its first sale, this section simply says so — "No generated sales yet". From the first attributed sale on, and while the commission is active, it reports four aggregate numbers and nothing else:

When the commission is off, the "already charged" and "pending" tiles collapse into a single one — "Commission it would have earned (not charged)", or "On hold from your previous agreement" if those sales were attributed while an agreement was active — so you see three numbers instead of four.

Once the commission is active the panel also shows a meter reading how much of your monthly limit has been used this cycle, read live from Shopify.

What this screen does not have, so you do not go looking: no per-order list, no export, no impression or conversion rate, and no chart. And one thing to watch on multi-currency stores — the totals are scoped to a single sales currency, the one from your most recent attributed sale. If you sell in several currencies, these totals do not show everything ProfitTap generated.

6.Turn the commission on

During the trial everything works with nothing authorised, and every sale generated in those 30 days is free forever — never charged retroactively. Authorising early is safe too: while trial days remain, sales stay free even if you already approved the 3%. The meter starts the day the trial ends.

When the trial expires without authorisation, the banner stops rendering and the panel says so plainly. Nothing is deleted — your rules, figures and settings stay exactly as they were — and authorising brings the banner back immediately, with the commission counting only from that moment on.

  1. In the panel, press Authorise the 3% commission.
  2. Shopify's own approval screen opens, showing the monthly safety limit. You approve it there — nothing can be charged before you do.
  3. Back in the panel, the badge reads that the 3% commission is active, with your monthly safety limit next to it.

About the monthly limit

It is a safety ceiling, not a price. You never pay the cap; it only limits how much can be charged in a cycle. The default depends on your Shopify billing currency — 600 EUR, 600 USD or 480 GBP, for example. At 80% of it the panel warns you and offers a raise that doubles the current cap; there is no free-text amount, and every raise needs fresh approval on Shopify's screen, so it is never updated silently. If you reach the cap, the banner pauses until your next billing cycle or until you approve a higher limit, and it returns with one click — nothing is deleted, and the pending commissions are collected once that higher limit is approved.

What you are actually billed

The 3% is calculated only on the value of the units our banner put in the cart, valued per unit in your own selling currency, after discounts and before tax. The banner adds one unit per tap. If the shopper later raises the quantity themselves we still bill only the units the banner added; if they lower it, we bill the smaller number. Each commission is rounded per sale, so your invoice is the sum of per-sale fees, not 3% of a grand total.

When: not when the order is paid, but 30 days after the sale, once the return window has passed. Fully refunded or cancelled inside those 30 days means the commission is never charged. On a partial refund we charge 3% only of what you kept. If we cannot read the refund state with certainty, we do not charge at all — when in doubt, you keep the money — and an event that stays unverifiable is written off after 55 days.

The one hard edge, and we would rather you read it here than discover it later: once a commission has been charged it is final. A Shopify usage record cannot be undone, so a refund after the 30-day window does not give the commission back.

ProfitTap never touches your card. Each commission is reported to Shopify as a usage record on the subscription you approved, and Shopify bills you. The same sale can never be charged twice.

If you sell in another currency

The commission is computed in your selling currency and converted using the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, with a 1% margin applied against us and the result rounded down — both steps favour you. The rate is the one from the day the commission is charged, 30 days after the sale, not the day of the sale: the sale value is frozen in your own currency when it happens, and only the conversion uses a later rate, because that is when the money moves. The source, the fixing date and the reference cross rate are printed on your Shopify invoice line, so you can check any charge against the ECB's public archive. Note that because of that margin, recalculating from the printed rate gives a slightly higher number than we actually charged. If no trustworthy rate is available the charge simply waits: a commission is never priced on a guessed rate.

Changing your mind

You can deactivate the 3% yourself from the panel — one button plus a confirmation, without contacting support. A farewell sweep runs first and charges what has already matured (30 days old, refunds verified), up to 25 commissions in that pass; anything left over stays on your account and is only charged if you authorise again. Nothing younger is charged while billing is off, and sales attributed while it is off are free forever.

One last practical note: ProfitTap sends you no email of any kind. No receipt, no cap warning, no trial-expiry notice. Every notice lives inside the panel, so open it now and then.

If something does not go to plan

Three things account for almost every case where the banner does not show up as expected. Here they are with the actual cause.

1. The banner does not appear anywhere on the storefront

Almost always the theme step. Either the block is in the theme editor but Save was never pressed — the banner only goes live on Save — or your theme does not support app blocks, in which case ProfitTap cannot be placed at all. Check the panel too: if your 30-day trial ended without authorisation, the banner stops rendering everywhere and the panel says it is paused. Nothing was lost; authorising brings it back instantly.

2. The banner appears on some product pages and not others

That is usually the app doing its job. The autopilot only offers a variant that is genuinely available, checked live, and if nothing buyable exists it draws no card rather than a dead one. If a page has a manual rule whose offer product is sold out, the rule yields to the autopilot — and if the autopilot is off, that page shows nothing. Remember too that the card only ever exists on product pages.

3. The theme editor shows a red "problem with the app block" notice

Cosmetic, and expected. It most often means the banner is already in your theme. There is nothing to fix — save and check a product page.

One more thing worth knowing: if the storefront request fails — a network blip on the shopper's side — the banner tries up to three times in total (the first request plus two retries, a few seconds apart) and then stays silent for that visit rather than showing something misleading. A reload usually clears it.
